The vibe is playful and earthy.

You will need your own flute to take part.  If you don't yet have one then please see the videos further down this page, showing you some different Native American style flutes, what to consider when you are buying one, and my recommendations.

'From Home' Flute Playing

You can join me from your home, playing your flute alongside my videos on YouTube.
At our October Drum Circle we played the DREAMTIME flute chant.  Playing in the style of a chant means playing the same short phrase repeatedly - this is a very meditative and relaxing way to play.  It works well together with other flute players too.  DREAMTIME has two parts for flutes, so is a duet.

Below is a 'play-along' video.

You can see here a 'handout' that I gave at the Circle, showing the simple rhythm patterns and how they fit with the pulse (or beat), and the finger placement for the melody too.

There is also a PDF file below which you can click to download.  It has a little information about dreams within Native American culture, which may give you an intention or some spiritual inspiration with which to 'drive' your playing.

Are you new to flute playing? Or even playing a musical instrument of any kind?

Be a creator, not a consumer! You can become a music maker without the need for any knowledge of note names, music theory, reading scores ... Ideal for those who have never had their musicality nurtured, and/or traumatised survivors of school violin and recorder lessons!

All you need to learn are the basic techniques of breath and simple finger placement, add some rhythm, and your flute will be singing!  It is played creatively and intuitively, no sheet music or expectation involved!

I play a little ditty, and you play it back, keeping in the beat together. It's a bit of a challenge but will definitely add to your flute playing and song creating skills!

Buying a Flute

The flutes that I can particularly recommend are available on the Sound Travels website.
Navajo Flute
High Spirits Pocket Flute (great for hands that are less agile)
High Spirits First Hawk Flute
I would encourage you to get your first flute in the key of A minor. This is the most popular key, and it will mean that playing with others in the circle will work really well.  Don't panic if you already have a flute in another key! It's all good :)

Things to think about before making a purchase:

Length and weight
Finger hole spacing*
The mouthpiece shape
The musical key
The cost!
Do you feel drawn to it?

*the longer the flute, the more stretch and agility you will need in your fingers and hands.
